Sibling Rivalries, The Story of (Mc) Cain and Abel

After Joe the Plumber, Joe the Hothead?

Sibling Rivalries, The Story of (Mc) Cain and Abel

As soon as I read this story, an old biblical folklore came to mind... The one about Cain (without the Mc) and his brother Abel. Abel, the first murder victim, is sometimes seen as the first martyr; while Cain, the first murderer, (or as in Mc's case, the character assassinator) is sometimes seen as a progenitor (originator) of evil.

There is another verse from the bible that could fit here, as well. "He Who
Lives in a Glass House Shouldn't Throw Stones at Others!" In other words, people should not attack others for their flaws when they have the same flaws. Or better yet, this phrase, not from the bible... "What goes around comes around". or, "If you do something bad to another, (eventually) you will get hurt too!" Nuff said, John McCain! thinkingblue.blogspot.com

TALK ABOUT SOCIALISM - A Case For Obama

The McCain-Palin Campaign has stooped so low it is hard to believe it is an American Organization... Did I just say that? The Republicans can only win through dirty politics, without substance... or so they presume. All the code words they use, seem so misplaced in today disastrous economy, which will only get much worse. (Especially, under a McCain/Palin administration) We will never see the end of all the sick, malicious name-calling and assassination of character during elections, unless the American voter will stop acting like frightened children, voting for fear-mongers who scare the BEJESUS out of them. Republican supporters need to grow-up, if we are to ever become ONE NATION again? But I won't hold my breath!

Below is a recent article from NEWSWEEK and it maps out exactly what has happened to John McCain and why he can not, should not and emphatically BETTER NOT become the next president. If he does, our nation most likely will not survive the slide the Republicans have brought about with their small government mantra, unregulated market creed and trickle-down, fairytale economics which means... huge welfare checks given to the rich, who are suppose to in return, share with us at the bottom. Talk about Socialism!

If McCain wins, all the generations to come will live an unimaginable existence of adversity. We can't allow the non-thinking amongst us to pick once again, another disastrous administration, due to the rightwing cabals filling their freighted little heads with code words of fear. That is if you believe in America and American Pride. thinkingblue

The Case for Barack Obama

Obama is pushing to change the parameters of the country's comfort zone.
That's leadership.
Fareed Zakaria
NEWSWEEK
From the magazine issue dated Oct 27, 2008

It has become fashionable to lament the state of presidential politics and decry
the tenor of campaigns. But in fact, this election has been a pleasant surprise.
In the last debate, as the candidates discussed their respective health-care
plans in some detail, the danger was that the American people would be turned
off not by negativity but by boredom.

Compare this election to the one in 1988—when the Pledge of Allegiance, Willie
Horton, flag factories and Belgian endives dominated the campaign. Or contrast
the relatively brief appearance of William Ayers with the barrage of Swift-Boat
attacks on John Kerry. Some of this is because the American people have clearly
tired of slash-and-burn campaigns. But much of it is because the two candidates
are men of decency and honor.

John McCain is brave, and this courage has manifested itself not simply in the
prisons of Vietnam. Over the past two decades he has broken with his party and
president on global warming, campaign finance, government spending and the use
of torture. He has chosen, for the most part, to forgo the racial coding that
the Republican Party had used for decades in its campaigns. But despite these
tremendous strengths, as a candidate for president in 2008, he is the wrong man
for the wrong job at the wrong time.

To watch McCain address the current economic crisis is to see a man out of step
with his time. His responses have been a recitation of old slogans—cut taxes,
limit the government, cut spending—that are largely irrelevant to today's
problems. Does anyone really believe that tackling earmarks will get credit
markets functioning? In some ways, McCain's intellectual fatigue reflects the
exhaustion of the ideological revolution begun by Reagan and Thatcher. The
country needs fresh thinking that is ready to accept new facts and new ideas.
It's a new world out there.

On foreign policy, John McCain is a fighter. In fact, his bellicosity has
increased over the past few years as he has discovered his inner
neoconservative. He wants to keep the battle going in Iraq, speaks casually of
bombing Iran and is skeptical of the Bush administration's diplomacy with North
Korea. He wants to kick Russia out of the G8 and humiliate China by excluding it
from that body as well. He sees a "league of democracies" locked in conflict
with an alliance of autocracies. This is cold-war nostalgia, not a strategy for
the 21st century.

McCain's problem is not only one of substance but perhaps more crucially of
temperament. Throughout the campaign, he has been volatile and impulsive. He
moves suddenly and unpredictably—one day suspending his campaign, the next
urging that the chairman of the SEC be fired, the third blaming Democrats for
the economic crisis. He apparently wanted to name as his vice presidential
candidate Joe Lieberman, a pro-choice semi-Democrat with decades of experience,
but then instead picked someone close to the opposite—Sarah Palin, a
rabble-rousing ultraconservative with limited experience and knowledge of the
issues.

By contrast, Barack Obama has been steady and reasoned throughout his campaign.
After careful deliberation, he endorsed the administration's decision to
intervene in the financial industry but with caveats—not to score campaign
points but to make the program work better. These modifications were adopted by
the administration and employed last week by Secretary Paulson.

Obama's broader economic agenda—health-care reform, infrastructure investments
and a major push for alternative energy—are large solutions to the growing
problems of our times. They are not radical, but neither are they overly
constrained by the fear of seeming liberal. Bill and Hillary Clinton were always
careful not to stray too far from the country's comfort zone. Obama is pushing
to change the parameters of that zone. That's leadership.

On foreign policy, Obama is cool to McCain's hot, discriminating about the
fights he wants to pick. He argues for greater international cooperation and the
aggressive use of diplomacy. He sees a world in which America doesn't have to
get adversarial with everyone and tries instead to work with other countries—of
whatever hue—to solve the common problems we face.

Let's be honest: neither candidate has past experience that is relevant to being
president, except that they have now both run large, multiyear,
multimillion-dollar, 50-state campaigns. By common consent, McCain's has been
chaotic and ineffective, while Obama has run a superb operation, and done so
with little of the drama and discord that usually plague political machines.

This is the case for Obama on substance, which is the most important criterion.
But symbolism is also a powerful force in human affairs. Imagine what people
around the world would think if they saw America once again inventing the
future. And imagine how Americans would feel if they saw their country once
again fulfilling its founding creed of equal opportunity, if they saw that there
really were no barriers in their country, not even to the highest office in the
land, not even for a man with a brown face and a strange name.

I admit to a personal interest. I have a 9-year-old son named Omar. I firmly
believe that he will be able to do absolutely anything he wants in this country
when he grows up. But I admit that I will feel more confident about his future
if a man named Barack Obama became president of the United States.

McCAIN PALIN AND THE LUNATIC FRINGE

McCAIN PALIN AND THE LUNATIC FRINGE

CLICK FOR YOUTUBE VIDEO
McCain said: "I'm proud of the people who come to our rallies" (even the ones
who scream racial epithets?). And then he segued into another yawner on all his
"veteran" buddies who love him so who show up. He said that ACORN is "destroying the fabric of democracy" (by registering poor people to vote?). He repeated the talk radio lie that Obama "launched his campaign" in Bill Ayers' living room. McCain was petulant (as when he cried again about how Obama forced him to go 100 percent negative because he dissed his phony "town hall" ploy). McCain said that Sarah Palin is a "role model for women" (some role model). He dismissed the equal pay for women case, Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., as if it were totally irrelevant, exposing once again his deep-seated misogyny.

We have just experienced the worst financial crisis in 70 years. The stock
market lost $3 trillion in the last three weeks. Millions of baby boomers close
to retirement have been forced to recalibrate their plans for their "golden
years." Eight hundred thousand people have lost their jobs in recent months. And
all McCain wants to talk about is Bill Ayers and ACORN?

Press kept under a watchful eye

CLEARWATER -- Constantly under the watchful eyes of security, the media
wasn't permitted to wander around inside Coachman Park to talk to Sarah Palin
supporters. When reporters tried to leave the designated press area and head
toward the bleachers where the crowd was seated, an escort would dart out of
nowhere and confront him or her and say, "Can I help you?'' and turn the person
around.

When one reporter asked an escort, who would not give her name, why the press
wasn't allowed to mingle, she said that in the past, negative things had been
written. The campaign wanted to avoid that possibility Monday.

McCain's Better Half, Number One and Two

The Long Run
Behind McCain, Outsider in Capital Wanting Back In

Cindy McCain, played a role in the Keating Five S&L scandal, and just as her husband was rehabilitating his reputation, she was caught stealing drugs from her nonprofit organization to feed her addiction to painkillers. She has a fortune that sets the McCain's apart from most other Americans, a problem in a presidential race that hinges on economic anxieties. She can be imprecise: she has repeatedly called herself an only child, for instance, even though she has two half-siblings. Those close to her say she aspires to be like another blonde, glamorous figure married to an older man: "Diana, the Princess of Wales" .

Carol McCain, (1st Mrs) worked in the Reagan White House as an event planner...She had stood by her husband during his captivity in N. Vietnam, never passing word of her debilitating car accident, (more about her...
http://www.snopes.com/politics/mccain/carol.asp ) - a few years after their reunion, McCain told her, he was leaving her for a younger, richer woman.

Carol McCain

McCain likes to illustrate his moral fiber by referring to his five years
as a prisoner-of-war in Vietnam. And to demonstrate his commitment to
family values, the 71-year-old former US Navy pilot pays warm tribute to
his beautiful blonde wife, Cindy, with whom he has four children. But
there is another Mrs. McCain who casts a ghostly shadow over
the Senator's presidential campaign. She is seldom seen and rarely written
about, despite being mother to McCain's three eldest children.

She was the woman McCain dreamed of during his long incarceration and
torture in Vietnam's infamous 'Hanoi Hilton' prison and the woman who
faithfully stayed at home looking after the children and waiting anxiously
for news. But when McCain returned to America in 1973 to a fanfare of
publicity and a handshake from Richard Nixon, he discovered his wife had
been disfigured in a terrible car crash three years earlier. Her car had
skidded on icy roads into a telegraph pole on Christmas Eve, 1969.

Her pelvis and one arm were shattered by the impact and she suffered
massive internal injuries.

When Carol was discharged from hospital after six months of life-saving
surgery, the prognosis was bleak. In order to save her legs, surgeons had
been forced to cut away huge sections of shattered bone, taking with it
her tall, willowy figure. She was confined to a wheelchair and was forced
to use a catheter. Today, she stands at just 5' 4" in and
still walks awkwardly, with a pronounced limp. Her body is held together
by screws and metal plates and, at 70, her face is worn by wrinkles that
speak of decades of silent suffering.

For nearly 30 years, Carol has maintained a dignified silence about the
accident, McCain and their divorce. But last week at the bungalow where
she now lives at Virginia Beach, a faded seaside resort 200 miles
south of Washington, she told The Mail on Sunday how McCain divorced her in 1980 and married Cindy, 18 years his junior and the heir to an Arizona brewing
fortune, just one month later.

"My marriage ended because John McCain didn't want to be 40, he wanted to
be 25. You know that happens ... it just does."

In 1979 — while still married to Carol — he met Cindy at a cocktail party
in Hawaii. Over the next six months he pursued her, flying around the
country to see her. Then he began to push to end his marriage. Some of
McCain's acquaintances are less forgiving, however. They portray the
politician as a self-centered womanizer who effectively abandoned his
crippled wife to 'play the field'. They accuse him of finally settling on
Cindy, a former rodeo beauty queen, for financial reasons.

Ted Sampley, who fought with US Special Forces in Vietnam and is now a
leading campaigner for veterans' rights, said: "I have been following John
McCain's career for nearly 20 years. I know him personally.
There is something wrong with this guy and let me tell you what it is —
deceit."

"When he came home and saw that Carol was not the beauty he left behind,
he started running around on her almost right away. Everybody around him
knew it. Eventually he met Cindy and she was young and beautiful and very
wealthy. At that point McCain just dumped Carol for something he thought
was better."

"McCain is the classic opportunist. He's always reaching for attention and
glory," he said. "After he came home, Carol walked with a limp. So he
threw her over for a poster girl with big money from Arizona. And the rest
is history."

Ross Perot, a billionaire Texas businessman, and a former presidential
candidate, who paid her medical bills all those years ago, now believes
that both Carol McCain and the American people have been taken in by a man
who is unusually slick and cruel — even by the standards of
modern politics.

Palin's Taking Us Back To McCarthyism!

A Good Read: Click for Frank Rich Op-Ed

The Terrorist Barack Hussein Obama

Palin’s Taking Us Back to "McCarthyism".

The acrimonious language in Palin’s speeches, take us back to "McCarthyism". We've all known that Rightdiculous columnists and their nastier Right-Wing talk radio hacks have been doing this rhetoric for years. And that their ditto heads have been soaking it up, in the comfort of their living rooms, where they shout obscenities and hateful oratory, alone or among their kind. Now McCain’s, VP choice allows them a place IN PUBLIC to caterwaul their Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter induced RAGE. It must be a catharses for the pathetic souls who have been listening and reading the unadulterated animosity coming over air waves or in print, directed at some unknown enemy. They now can UNLEASH the bottled up hatred, in the open and have a recognizable foe, thanks to the self-proclaimed pit-bull. The wingnut goons behind desks or microphones must be MIGHTY PROUD! “HURRAY FOR SARAH PALIN!” they shout. She’s harvesting the grotesque seeds of hatred and distortion we’ve so fervently sewn!

Sarah Palin drops first puck, gets booed at Flyers game

E&P reports that Sarah Palin was greeted with a chorus of boos at the Philadelphia Flyers game where she dropped the puck at the Flyers'opener:

You never know where you are gonna find a political scoop, but Lynn Zinser at her NYT hockey "Slapshot" blog just posted that Sarah Palin, in her much-ballyhooed appearance dropping the puck at the Philly Flyers' opener, was greeted by "resounding (almost deafening) boos from the Flyers crowd."

The biggest problem: when Palin came out to onto the Wachovia Center ice Saturday night -- greeted by resounding (almost deafening) boos from the Flyers crowd -- the the two hockey players who had no choice but to appear with her in that photo op were turned into props in a political campaign.

Is there a skeleton in John McCain's POW closet?

Is there a skeleton in John McCain's POW closet?

The Rolling Stone has an article called "Make-Believe Maverick"

Things that are taller than John McCain,
Besides these three people, and the SUV

23/6 commented on this article, and also referenced John McCain's sensitivity to his shortness. (Huh?)

The shortness part, isn't why I am blogging this. Because I could care less if McCain is touchy about his lack of tallness. What I did find interesting was in the comment section, at the bottom of the webpage. A comment made by an ex-Air Force officer, who remarked about John McCain's POW HERO status and lack there of. Now I don't know if this ex-Air Force officer knew John McCain or not. But never-the-less, it raises a lot of suspicion about Maverick McCain's Hero Rank. I can't help but wonder, why the Obama Camp doesn't seem interested in using it, the same way the NASTY ONES, on the other side of the political arena would... (THE RED SIDE)

An interesting comment from demogorgon
As an ex-air force officer (1962-1967) I'm glad it's finally coming out that this man is NO hero! He destroyed 5 airplanes, admitted that he was a "gambler" when he flew; went in alone on a Hanoi target when the bombing run was being called off; and then tried to "outrun" a SAM missile. Things got SO bad that none of his fellow officers wanted to fly with him and he was being re-evaluated for removal from flying status when he was shot down. Words like "reckless", "intemperate" and "lacks common sense" were part of the lexicon of John McCain, naval pilot. I don't mind the "confessions" while he was a POW, that was pretty much SOP, but what I DO mind is that his so-called "selflessness" when he "refused" to accept early release was anything but...he WAS offered early release because of his family connections, but was ORDERED not to accept it! And now, his never-ending use of his "heroism" as if he'd actually been one. He's been a manipulator and a user all his life...EXACTLY the same as George Bush, each being dismally inept or an abject failure at everything they have "attempted"...other than to use family connections to get ahead. (The end of demogorgon's comment)

---

Holy, "SOP", Batman! If only one third of this is true... it's explosive.

I also know, why the Obama Camp will not use it... We on the Left are above the shitty shenanigans the right-winged ones use... I sincerely hope Obama can win without the dirty, low-down, character assassination tactics the republicans, in all their hatefulness, rely on!!! Come on America elect decency over unscrupulousness for a change. The peace-of-mind you save may be your own! thinkingblue.blogspot.com

Excerpted From The Rolling Stone Magazine:

In its broad strokes, McCain's life story is oddly similar to that of the current occupant of the White House. John Sidney McCain III and George Walker Bush both represent the third generation of American dynasties. Both were born into positions of privilege against which they rebelled into mediocrity. Both developed an uncanny social intelligence that allowed them to skate by with a minimum of mental exertion. Both struggled with booze and loutish behavior. At each step, with the aid of their fathers' powerful friends, both failed upward. And both shed their skins as Episcopalian members of the Washington elite to build political careers as self-styled, ranch-inhabiting Westerners who pray to Jesus in their wives' evangelical churches.

23/6 Presents: Things That Are Taller Than John McCain

A new Rolling Stone article demolishes John McCain's self-anointed maverick status. He was a bad pilot who benefited greatly from his family's Navy lineage. As a POW, he confessed to his torturers. He cheated on both wives and has an uncontrollable temper. Also, John McCain is touchy about his small stature. Sayeth the Stone:

"McCain is sensitive about his physical appearance, especially his height. The candidate is only five-feet-nine, making him the shortest party nominee since Michael Dukakis." Some people speculate that McCain is actually five-feet-seven, without the lifts.

Either way, Rumplestiltskin is a shorty. Taking a cue from Things That Are Younger Than John McCain, 23/6 presents: Things That Are Taller Than John McCain:

She's No Lady!

SARAH PALIN, IS NO LADY!

Sarah Palin is promoting hate. Her rallies are about hate and are beginning to show it. The Palin crowds are starting to shout ugly, disgusting verbalizations hurled towards Obama i.e. "KILL HIM! OFF WITH HIS HEAD! HE'S TREASONOUS!"

Palin and McCain should be arrested and put in prison for SLANDER because they are inciting, riotous notions in their followers by advocating hatred. America's way of life is on life-support and these two bozos are only caring about themselves! (Oh, and Cindy McCain, the poor little rich girl, has joined their Bozo Ranks)

While, Palin and McCain are running around spreading HATE, our country's way of life is DYING! This has got to stop! We don't want or need their kind of FEAR! With so many of us losing our life's savings, our homes, our jobs and our dignity, isn't that enough to weigh down our peace of mind? Enough with the Crazies!

More reasons to disfavor Sarah Palin
Palin's ascension shows GOP's lack of interest in governing

The above article, goes right to the heart of why the Republican base is so in love with Sarah Palin. She doesn't give them facts, she gives them the red-meat they lust for. I'm sure most, can remember people like Palin, in high school. The bubbly types, who dub anyone who doesn't fit their interpretation of what's "IN", a pariah. Yes, they have a blueprint of what is "IN", the right style, a snooty air, a superficial manner will get you, "IN". As bad as this exclusivity is, it could be tolerated if they also had a "live and let live" attitude. But unfortunately, anyone who crosses their path, who's not "IN", they will socially banish. They do this, by falsely labeling, and contriving suspicions of any non-"IN", creating an impression that something is shockingly wrong with anyone who, by their calculations, cannot be part of their "IN" crowd. But what's most perplexing is... It's one thing to behave like this in a state of childhood but carried into adulthood? Mind boggling! thinkingblue

The Other Human

For a change of pace from the political arena...
This month's National Geographic has a very interesting article about the other humans who lived upon our planet, The Neanderthals. We know so little about the development of our species. Searching for information on it, will bring you many theories. Most agree though, that the human species, in one form or another have been around for a couple million years... Yet we have so little information on their evolutionary process to modern day man. Reading this very interesting article will make you acknowledge how vulnerable life is. So many species have come and gone and we have barely scratched the surface of realizing their existence. Perhaps we will never learn completely how life formed upon our planet and how we got to where we are today, but there's one fact for sure; Science will endure and will never give up its quest to bring us answers. National Geographic is a good way to keep up with new scientific discovery. http://www.thethinkingblue.com

Last of the Neanderthals

Eurasia was theirs alone for 200,000 years.
Then the newcomers arrived.

In March of 1994 some spelunkers exploring an extensive cave system in northern Spain poked their lights into a small side gallery and noticed two human mandibles jutting out of the sandy soil. The cave, called El Sidrón, lay in the midst of a remote upland forest of chestnut and oak trees in the province of Asturias, just south of the Bay of Biscay. Suspecting that the jawbones might date back as far as the Spanish Civil War, when Republican partisans used El Sidrón to hide from Franco's soldiers, the cavers immediately notified the local Guardia Civil.

But when police investigators inspected the gallery, they discovered the remains of a much larger—and, it would turn out, much older—tragedy.

Within days, law enforcement officials had shoveled out some 140 bones, and a local judge ordered the remains sent to the national forensic pathology institute in Madrid. By the time scientists finished their analysis (it took the better part of six years), Spain had its earliest cold case. The bones from El Sidrón were not Republican soldiers, but the fossilized remains of a group of Neanderthals who lived, and perhaps died violently, approximately 43,000 years ago. The locale places them at one of the most important geographical intersections of prehistory, and the date puts them squarely at the center of one of the most enduring mysteries in all of human evolution.

The Neanderthals, our closest prehistoric relatives, dominated Eurasia for the better part of 200,000 years. During that time, they poked their famously large and protruding noses into every corner of Europe, and beyond—south along the Mediterranean from the Strait of Gibraltar to Greece and Iraq, north to Russia, as far west as Britain, and almost to Mongolia in the east. Scientists estimate that even at the height of the Neanderthal occupation of western Europe, their total number probably never exceeded 15,000. Yet they managed to endure, even when a Cooling climate turned much of their territory into something like northern Scandinavia today—a frigid, barren tundra, its bleak horizon broken by a few scraggly trees and just enough lichen to keep the reindeer happy.

By the time of the tragedy at El Sidrón, however, the Neanderthals were on the run, seemingly pinned down in Iberia, pockets of central Europe, and along the southern Mediterranean by a deteriorating climate, and further squeezed by the westward spread of anatomically modern humans as they emerged from Africa into the Middle East and beyond. Within another 15,000 years or so, the Neanderthals were gone forever, leaving behind a few bones and a lot of questions. Were they a clever and perseverant breed of survivors, much like us, or a cognitively challenged dead end? What happened during that period, roughly 45,000 to 30,000 years ago, when the Neanderthals shared some parts of the Eurasian landscape with those modern human migrants from Africa? Why did one kind of human being survive, and the other disappear? READ MORE CLICK HERE

Neanderthal Man

The discovery of the Neanderthal Man, originally believed to be a possible
ancestor of Homo Sapiens. DNA testing showed that they were in fact a seperate
species from us, one who shared a common ancestor with a Hominid who lived in
Africa some 500,000 years ago.

Vote For Obama Nov. 4, 2008 OR ELSE...

I received this forward today.

That Little Penny In The Parking Lot

Remember this every time you pass that little penny in the parking lot.

I always thought that it was for good luck, but I love this version better.

I found a penny today

Laying on the ground.

But it's not just a penny,

This little coin I've found.

Found pennies come from heaven,

that's what my Grandpa told me.

He said Angels toss them down.

Oh, how I loved that story.

He said when an Angel misses you,

They toss a penny down;

Sometimes just to cheer you up,

To make a smile out of your frown.

So, don't pass by that penny

When you're feeling blue.

It may be a penny from heaven

That an Angel's tossed to you.

So now pass this on to people you care about

I just did.

An Angel is now watching over you.

Have A Great Day!

There was a time when I would think nothing of a Cute little story like this, but since George W Bush, I think differently... Now, I would never tell it to my "Little Ones" unless I told them, it was just pretend. Unfortunately, too many adults in America, believe in Angels and would retell this little fairy story, as though it were the honest to goodness, TRUTH. And because of that, we may still wind up with another George W Bush but this time Ole' Dubya
will be wearing a SKIRT! thinkingblue

Please scroll down to read a few statistics about RELIGION IN AMERICA.

Keep scrolling down:

The Religious and Other Beliefs of Americans 2005

That very large majorities of the American public believe in God, miracles, the survival of the soul after death, heaven, the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the Virgin birth will come as no great surprise. What may be more surprising is that significant minorities believe in ghosts,
UFOs, witches, astrology, and in reincarnation – the belief that they were
themselves reincarnated from other people. Six in ten believe in hell and the devil.

These are some of the findings of The Harris Poll of 889 U.S. adults conducted online by Harris Interactive® between November 15 and 22, 2005.

The survey also found that women are more likely than men to hold both Christian and non-Christian beliefs. Republicans are more likely than Democrats and Independents to hold Christian beliefs. The level of belief is generally highest among people without a college education and lowest among those with postgraduate degrees.

The 82 percent of adults who believe in God include 86 percent of women and 93 ercent of Republicans but only 78 percent of men, 69 percent of those with postgraduate degrees, and 75 percent of political independents.

The 73 percent of adults who believe in miracles include 79 percent of women, 83 Percent of those with high school education or less and 76 percent of Republicans. Fewer (66%) men, post graduates (50%) and Independents (65%) believe in miracles.

The 70 percent of those who believe in the survival of the soul after death include 74 percent of women, 82 percent of Republicans but only 66 percent of men. Three-quarters (76%) of those without a college degree share this belief but only 53 percent of those with postgraduate degrees believe in this.

The 70 percent who believe in heaven includes 76 percent of women and 64 percent of men.

This falls to 60 percent of Independents and 49 percent among people with postgraduate degrees.

Seven in ten (70%) believe that Jesus is God or the son of God. This belief is more prevalent among women (75%) than men (64%), among those with less education (77%) than among post graduates (48%) and among Republicans (82%) than Independents (62%).

On almost all the beliefs that are central to Christianity, there is a general pattern with:

Higher prevalence of belief among women than among men.
Higher prevalence of belief among people with no college education and lower prevalence of belief among those with postgraduate education.

Other interesting findings include:

Six in ten adults believe in the devil (61%) and in hell (59%).
Forty percent of the public, including 46 percent of women and 33 percent of men believe in ghosts.

One third (34%) believe in UFOs. More men (38%) than women (31%) hold this belief.

Just under three in ten (28%) adults believe in witches with slightly more men (30%) than women (27%) believing in them.

One quarter (25%) of adults believe in astrology including 30 percent of women and 19 percent of men.

One in five (21%) believe in reincarnation, the belief that they were once
another person.

While many people are very clear on what they do or do not believe in, there is a significant proportion (ranging from 10% to 25%), depending on the belief, that indicates that they are "not sure" one way or another. For example, 10 percent say they are "not sure" if they believe in
God and 25 percent say they are "not sure" if they believe in reincarnation or UFOs.

NO WONDER WE WOUND UP WITH GEORGE W BUSH, AND MAY STILL HAVE TO ENDURE THE LIKES OF SARAH PALIN... thinkingblue
