To the editor:President Bush is endangering my retirement and the retirements of millions of Americans by taking the first step in his adverse plan to dismantle Social Security.

Recently, White House sources revealed their plan to cut promised benefits to retirees by nearly a third. And these cuts are guaranteed -- whether you opt in to the Bush plan or not.

For those entering the workforce today, that means more than a 25 percent cut in the retirement benefits they're counting on; for their children, it guarantees a 46 percent cut.

This destructive day is the first day of the rest of our lives, our children's lives, our grandchildren's lives et al. Of course President Bush does not fathom this concept. To this un-empathetic, obtuse person who can only see as far as his own mortal, brief existence on this earth, only today matters. (It only matters as long as he is a part of that today.) His lack of vision for the future inhabitants of our country will hurt all generations to come and create an avalanche of deep poverty.

We, the people who can see further than our own duration must rise up and speak out against such a possible future pillaging to our capability to have a roof over our head and some food on our table, when work is not an option to a livelihood.

We mustn’t stand by and let George W. Bush and the Republicans cut our promised guaranteed retirement!
