Thinking Outside The GOP "Good Book"
When I read the below article I realized that we are being driven back into the 20th century, to the 1950's to be exact. I was a young child back then and was growing up in a world of double standards, A MAN'S WORLD to be exact. Any sexual activity was A-OK for the boys but for the girls, all they would get is a slew of nasty labels attached to them for their entire lifetime. I also remember feeling THIS ISN'T FAIR, even though I was only ten.
In our neighborhood one day was a funeral for a girl who died from a back-alley abortion, her coffin was outside of the church on the sidewalk, a priest stood in the doorway of the church yelling at the girl's parents, "SHE CANNOT COME INTO THIS CHURCH BECAUSE SHE HAD COMMITTED A MORTAL SIN."
I cried. thinkingblue
States Where Right-Wingers Are Promoting Shocking Measures to Keep Women Barefoot and Pregnant
The birth control skirmish is not the only regressive, anti-woman, anti-science battle being waged in this country.
February 18, 2012 |
It's been an exhausting few weeks for reproductive rights supporters. Most recently, we've been treated to a new round of a battle over birth control, as the debate over whether employees at religiously affiliated institutions should be required to receive insurance that covers birth control without a co-payment -- a right employees of all other U.S. companies will have under the Obama administration's new healthcare law -- rages on in Washington.
Many of us can't believe we're having a conversation, let alone a full-blown debate, about this issue in the year 2012, but here we are, watching women get shut out of this week's hearing on the subject, listening to men wax poetic about the "good old days" when low-cost birth control meant holding an aspirin between one's knees and enduring childish rants from a cabal of overly powerful Catholic bishops who, in the astute words of Jon Stewart, have "confused the war on...religion with not always getting everything [they] want."
But attention-grabbing as the anti-birth control crusade may be, it is not the only regressive, anti-woman, anti-science battle being waged in this country. In fact, right-wing politicians are attempting to roll back reproductive rights across the nation. One year ago, we reported on a number of state-level reproductive rights battles. Today we check in with many of those states (plus some new ones), only to find that the war on women has not let up at all and abortion bans being introduced to legislatures are getting more scary, more intrusive, more punitive and in some cases, gaining more traction.
This brutal combined assault on family planning and abortion rights, if it continues to be successful, will hit disadvantaged women the hardest, and result in an environment of compulsory pregnancy for many of the nation's women.
Now, here it is 2012 and this same dark-age mentality has reared its ugly head again.
What is happening to our country since the advent of the evangelical rise to power via the Tea Party, is really SICK. I know people have been raised from day one to believe, the writings from over 2000 to 5000 years ago, found in caves, dubbing human beings' as divine, are the whole truth and nothing but the truth. But some people escaped such harsh indoctrination and can comprehend that humans are not divine and in fact, are like all the other animals who share this planet. When you can think outside the GOP "GOOD BOOK" written by men, you can understand that all this War on Women comes from some sort of twisted belief script that's totally rooted in supernatural mythology. (To believe that a human female body is nothing but an incubator or hatchery is extremely disturbing, to say the least.)
To conclude that a fertilized egg, with no awareness, is a person, is akin to believing that a human cell is also a person since there is a possibility that it can be cloned.
I hope intellectual collectiveness will eventually block these radioactive rays of insanity conjured up by frighten little children, from their deepest darkest hallucinations, and brought to the surface in the shape of BATSHIT CRAZY laws, that they hurl in the faces of those who THINK.
We cannot and will not stand for it! thinkingblue
