Right-wingnuts are cashing in on Ted Kennedy's Death:

Right-wingnuts are cashing in on Ted Kennedy's Death

The below article was posted on mediamatters.org It appears
that the right wingnuts are scared to death over the possibility
that Ted Kennedy's death will revamp or give enlightenment to the
public option in the Health-Care Reform bill. Actually they would
like this bill to be slaughtered all together. They (health
insurance corporations) stand to lose a lot of money if this bill
is passed so the lies fly about like lovebugs in September. I
took some of their statements and added a comment of my own...
This is an important cause for ALL Americans and we should ALL
stand behind Health-Care Reform. thinkingblue.blogspot.com

A few excerpts( in red) from Dick Morris' group cashes in on Kennedy's death with thinkingblue comments in blue:

We cannot allow government to run the health care system like they do the Post Office!

(And the Public School System! And the Police dept! And the Fire dept! And
the Libraries! And the Highways! And the ON AND ON… ad infinitum! thinkingblue)

We must continue this battle.

(WTF, battle are they talking about… THE BATTLE AGAINST TRYING TO LOWER HEALTH-CARE COSTS SO EVERYONE WILL BE ABLE TO GET GOOD HEALTH INSURANCE. Anyone listening to AH’s like Dick (like we need another Republican Dick) needs to trade in their sheep-like brain for a practical judgment type of one. thinkingblue)

As I write this, the League has to firm up its TV ad buys for the next two weeks. We have already raised over $1.3 million. But we need to raise $5 million to kill off Obama Care.

(Of course they can raise lots and lots of money… It’s the wealthy
Health-Care Industry that is backing them because they want to
stop the prospect of a public option in order to continue with
their greedy quest to bilk the average American
out of more money while delivering less health care. thinkingblue)

We need your urgent help to make this happen – Dick Morris says the League of American Voters is the "the number one group today fighting Obama Care, they deserve your support."

(Giving them your support to fight Health Care Reform... is like kicking the S**T out of your neighbor and then taking them to the EMERGENCY ROOM for care because they can’t afford health-care insurance. There they will wait for hours suffering and bleeding because the health-care employees must see the hundreds of uninsured before your neighbor!!! Maybe that will give you enough time to regret kicking the S**T out of your neighbor in the first place! thinkingblue)

Dick is the League's chief strategist - and actually crafted our ads and national campaign.

(He’s bragging about being a health-care lobbyist…? Man oh man, what a DICK! thinkingblue)

We are having a tremendous effect. Help us continue

(TO PIED PIPER ALL, DOWN THE ROAD TO HELL! thinkingblue)

The Voices Of Reason On Health Care Reform

The debate over health care reform has gone viral. It's as though some kind of celestial dust has floated down from the furthest corners of outer-space and infected so many of our brains. When you see and hear people who look like you and talk somewhat like you go, completely berserk and make no-nada- squat sense at all, you want to scream at the top of your lungs "BEAM ME UP, SCOTTY, FAST!" and get transported to a safer more logical place.

But alas, that can only happen in science fiction (so far) and we are stuck here to share the breathing space with some pretty frightening characters, now called Townhallers. I went into the Urban Dictionary to see if this word has unofficially been dubbed a new “urban utterance” in our English Language and this is what I found:
Townhaller - One who is easily turned against the establishment through fear mongering and partisan rhetoric, who attends political gatherings not for the purpose of discussion, but disruption. Townhallers may become violent if discouraged from interrupting productive or informative debate and discussion. “These townhallers will believe anything, as long as Sarah Palin posts it on her twitter feed.” http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=townhaller

Hopefully, when a Health Care Reform Bill is eventually signed, we will all be able to calm down. That is until the Limbaugh's and Fox News people churn up some other reason for their viewers/listeners to go bonkers and make total and complete asses out of themselves. Then a new urban word will appear to describe such people or events.

I put together this video to try and make sense out of the senselessness that is going on at the Town hall meetings to discuss Health Care Reform.

One Little Star Fish For Health Care Reform

I just wrote to President Obama concerning the public option or
lack thereof. I am so disappointed that this might be a
possibility, especially after I have been breaking my neck trying
to support the Health Care Reform Bill with a Public Option
inclusion. I went for the Dem's bait of giving a dollar a day
contribution to show the naysayers that we are united in this
cause. It appears nothing is working for us pro-health care
reformers and the teabagger/townhallers and the insurance lobbies
are winning. Even President Obama is capitulating on his promise
to get it passed during his day in the sun. Did I say I was
disappointed? Well that’s an understatement. What I am
feeling right now is total DISGUST. Below is my letter to the
President (that and a dollar will get me a cup of coffee - but
only with a senior discount...) if you care to read my (
one
little star fish
self) clamoring to no avail on this
health care reform issue. thinkingblue

---

Dear Mr. President,

A few weeks ago, when I thought Public
Option on health care reform, was a possibility, I signed up for
donating a dollar a day until the Health Care Reform bill was
signed by you. Well, now it looks as though the far right-wing
teabagger/townhallers and the insurance industry lobbies are
winning and there will be no health care reform for, we the
people of the United States of America and we will continue to
suffer under the greedy insurance companies who make health care
unaffordable for most of us.

In my own family my daughter who is a school
teacher, cannot afford health care coverage for her family, she
only has coverage for herself. (It would take a third of yearly
salary, for a family of four)...

My son who is self-employed as a local
musician pays $650 a month for CATASTROPHIC health insurance. If
he or his wife should get sick they will have to come up with
$5000 in order to get treatment (The $650 pays for nothing but
coverage - not preventative, as in a yearly check-up - it’s
strictly an amount paid to the insurance company who is gambling
that my son will not get sick. Pretty good odds considering my
son and daughter-in-law are young).

This is sad but not as sad as all those
Americans who have no coverage AT ALL because they can't afford
the premiums the insurance companies demand since profit is their
only motivation.

Once again, please tell me how to get out of
this agreement I have committed to... The dollar a day donation
is at this site: https://donate.barackobama.com/page/contribute/dnc08hcdollar?source=20090729_dollar_d_2pm
because I would rather donate this sum of money to some other
cause that will use the money more effectively. I know this is a
measly, piddling amount to those who are fighting the health care
reform bill (Why else would they fight it, if they were in the
same boat as the rest of us?) but it’s not to me!

I don't want my credit card charged
again because I feel it is just money thrown away.

Thank you,
A voter from Florida

Mobs, Bullies and Fascists 101

MOBS BULLIES AND FASCISTS 101

Rush Limbaugh is the personification of a bully and a tyrant. He incites people to form mobs and do his dictate. I hope everyone will someday realize that Rush Limbaugh is not to be respected he should not be worshiped but abandoned and scorned.

There is only one reason for the fomenting of hatred in the Rush Limbaugh world and that is to rake in the dough. And goddammit lots and lots of moola go into Limbaugh's back pockets. The reason for this, well it's not rocket science? The whatfor is all around us... It's because there are too many weak-minded people in our midst. They may work hard and try to play by the rules; the trouble is they are too willing to obey those who scare the BEJESUS out of them.

I admit life is an eerie and hair-raising experience. There’s danger and peril all around waiting to pounce on any innocent who happens to wonder by. But we can't live our lives in a constant state of fear. We must venture out and take our chances in order to survive.

The shock-jocks like Limbaugh are out there in the shadows of their microphones waiting to make an attack on the innate fears of the populous. They exaggerate, amplify, blow out of proportion and hyperbolize everything and I mean EVERYTHING that may cause apprehension amongst those who are unaware of what the radio host real motive is (make ada BIG BUCKS!). In other words they prey upon the gullible for gain.

I wish these vulnerable people could become informed the old fashion way by reading and inquiring the many information outlets available (legitimate newspapers and educational library books) but that's too difficult for them, plus they may be too worn-out from the hard lives they are forced to lead, due to lack of information and education. It's just too easy to click a knob on the old TV or radio and tune into the shows that dumb down their audiences. Also, the Limbaugh's give them a punching bag to direct their pant-up anger at. It’s not only sad, it’s criminal. But we do live in a free country and because of that, we all possess the freedom to be irresponsible and that definitely is so irresponsible. Below is a video I made from the information I gathered from the Media Matters and Our Future websites. Thank goodness for sites like Media Matters and Our Future who inform and educate us on the misinformation floated out there by Right-Wing zealots who stand behind and protect big corporate interests. thinkingblue.blogspot.com

Fox Nation's Big, Big, BIG, Bigoted Article

FOX NATION ARTICLE: Another Racist, Crazy Conservative Attack on
Obama: Health Reform as Reparations

A COUPLE OF COMMENTS TO THIS FOX NATION BIGOTED ARTICLE ON DIGG

"wow they'll say anything"

"Every time I read crazy bullshit like this, the phrase "grasping at straws" comes to mind."

"It's down right scary how dumb these people are."

thinkingblue COMMENT:

I must admit, I live in my own little sphere where such stupidity does not
reign supreme. I stay away from Fox news, (if my remote button
lands on it even for a second... I quickly push next to get the
hell out of there, FAST). I don't view the backwardness of
Fox viewers as scary (unless, they start donning white sheets and
pointed hoods). But I do get angry that there is a media outlet
that fuels such ignorance and makes money doing so, to boot. The
FoxTV/Right-wing talk radio charlatans use their follower’s
shallowness to control this audience and what a sad lot they are.
Always in a state of anger, believing some group is to blame for
their hardships; when in reality it's the very right-wing
political and religious belief system they have bought into that
keeps them bound by their own ignorance. It's really quite sad.

Another Racist, Crazy Conservative Attack on
Obama: Health Reform as Reparations

By
Tana Ganeva, AlterNet
Posted on July 28, 2009, Printed on August 15, 2009
http://www.alternet.org/bloggers/www.alternet.org/141626/

An article proudly featured in the top spot
of Fox Nation today pulls off the impressive feat of combining
two seemingly unrelated Conservative pastimes -- battling the
creation of a viable health care system and screeching about
"reverse-racism" -- into one totally absurd, bizarre
and racist attack on Obama.

"Reparations by way of health care reform?" asks the
headline accusingly. A large picture of Obama, brow furrowed as
he thoughtfully considers more ways to destroy Freedom and
oppress white men, accompanies the headline.

Often Fox Nation writes headlines completely unrelated to the
pieces they link to, in order to rile up their commenters and get
clicks. But in this case, the piece really is as batshit insane
as the headline suggests:

Still believe in post-racial politics? Read the health care
bill. It's affirmative action on steroids, deciding everything
from who becomes a doctor to who gets treatment on the basis of
skin color.

President Obama is on the record as being officially opposed
to reparations for slavery. But as with other issues, you have to
sift through his eloquent rhetoric and go beyond the teleprompter
to get at what he really means.

The piece goes on to reveal the shocking information that
Obama opposes reparations because they don't go far enough.
Gasp! Not, only that, but the First Black President's ploy to
sneakily usher in something worse than reparations is to
rig the new health care system to privilege African-Americans.

Of course, as has been pointed out 5 trillion times before,
there is no such thing as an Obama health care "plan".
While the President has aired his preferences, he has not put
forth a set policy. And indeed, when the article digs into the
legislation, it references (or misrepresents) something that
actually exists -- the house bill, which has very little to do
with Obama. Yet the piece nevertheless stokes racist fears about
Obama personally instituting preferential treatment for blacks by
way of health care reform.

This absurdity has already been aired by Glenn Beck. But is it being primed for full-on
conservative meme status? Something just racist and fringe enough
to pick up steam and be repeated, ad nauseum, by the wingnuts and
eventually legitimized by reports in mainstream media? As if the
health care debate needed to be degraded further.

Right-wing Town Hall Boobs

Right-wing Town Hall Boobs

I just got a comment on my Clipmarks blog, the one about the town hall raucous (2009 MOB SCENES brought to you by the GOP) that I would like to
share. It comes from a person who's screen name is Clip-On-Tie:

clip-on-tie

And just so you can spot an "angry mob" member, they
sometimes refer to a female Senator as “ma’am.”
They listen to anything other than NPR and do not watch Keith
Olderwomann. ("olderwomann" Who the hell is he making fun of here? tb)

Oh yeah, and most of them work for a living. They
don't sharpen pencils at the non-profits, eat a bag lunch of
braised fennel and you won't find them eating foie gras at a
Harry Belafonte benefit concert for the Hillary Clinton Legal
Defense Fund. Other than that, consider that person part of the mob.

If someone you know shows these signs of being an "angry
mob" member, report him or her to flag@whitehouse.gov.
Someone will soon be a long to take care of the person and you
can be assured it will be kind and loving care. Do not ask for
the exact nature of this care; that’s something an angry mob
member would do.

This clip is just awful. Talk about deceit and hate -- just
sickening. Gross. (FROM CLIP-ON-TIE)

----

Can anyone answer this question for me? Why do Right-wing sympathizers’
always assume that only republicans work hard. If that were the case it would mean that over two thirds of the adult working age population, do not work and if they do, it's work that's child's play... HUH? I worked very hard all my life and all my life I was a Liberal... Anyway, here is my response to Clip-On-Boob. thinkingblue

To: clipmarks commenter: Apparently, you haven’t watched any of the videos I have offered on the Townhallers (new urban word) if you had you wouldn’t be defending them (or then again, you most likely were told by the likes of Limbaugh et al, to join the mobs to stop Health Care Reform. Not because you think it’s a bad bill but because you were TOLD to hurt President Obama in the hopes that he’ll fail.)

These people are a sad lot, what they are willing to swallow is pathetic. Be
very afraid because Obama wants to pull the plug on Grandma? Does that sound rational to you? Obama wants us to be like Russia? WTF??

I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion even if such opinion sounds stupid or insane. But when they go out and display their absurdities in public and are filmed on videos which are spread across all our TV’s and don’t feel an inkling of shame or regret at their actions (as a matter of fact they act proud, that they are so pathetically irresponsible and mindless) well that’s just morbid.

There is one good thing that comes out of all this madness, for those of us
who can comprehend, a validation that WE ARE PROUD TO BE LIBERALS
WHO HAVE THE ABILITY TO THINK! thinkingblue

Female candidate deploys revealing images of herself and Chancellor in campaign

By Tony Paterson in Berlin

Thursday, 13 August 2009

With her political dream-team poised to capture 51 per cent of the vote in next month's elections, Angela Merkel hardly needed to show off her generous cleavage to attract support.

But in Berlin, one member of her family-oriented conservative party is hoping that the German Chancellor's breasts – juxtaposed with her own – will secure victory in a tight race. Vera Lengsfeld is the Christian Democrat candidate in the eastern Berlin district of Freidrichshain, and yesterday placards distributed in the area were a little racier than typical campaign fare.

They carried a 2008 picture of Ms Merkel in a revealing low-cut
evening dress alongside a photograph of Ms Lengsfeld in
comparable attire that emphasised her own considerable bosom.
"We have more to offer," boasted the accompanying slogan.

At least in Germany BOOBS ARE REALLY BOOBS... Here in the states boobs are townhallers... thinkingblue.blogspot.com

Town Hall Madness

TOWN HALL MADNESS

More Republican dittoheads sent out by their leaders (GOP, Limbaugh, Rightwing organizations and Fox News) to disrupt the town hall meetings on the health care debate.

This town hall madness does not make any sense at all. These people are an embarrassment to all America, acting like a bunch of undisciplined children. Displaying anger against something that is in their own best interest just for the spite of it and I will do anything within my power (making videos, giving a dollar a day to the cause and posting on facebook) to expose their insanity just like they will do anything to expose their hatred towards our ELECTED President.
thinkingblue.blogspot.com.

Gun Toting Townhaller on Obama Route Calls For Blood

A gun toting and displaying man waiting on the route President Obama will be taking to a town hall is carrying a sign calling for blood.

The sign states:
"Time to Water the tree of Liberty."

That's what the sign says-- a fragment of a quote from Thomas Jefferson. The total quote reads,

"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is it's natural manure."

This was written in a letter from Jefferson to William Stephens Smith, November 13, 1787

The sign is clearly a reference to spilling blood. Tie that together with a gunman openly displaying his gun on the path President Obama will be taking to his town hall and you have to wonder about the local lawmen who are allowing this display.

Is this a test the NRA has put in place? Is it simply another ratcheting up of the tension and anger around health care? Is it simply a hyper-macho protester showing off his phallic symbol?

Gun rights do not extend to brandishing guns in the presence of the president. Any fool who choses to do so should lose his gun ownership privileges.

GOP Bigotry and Racism 2009

GOP Bigotry and Racism 2009

Keith Olbermann's special comment discusses the bigotry that is coming from the GOP base and how they are capitalizing on it to stop Health Care Reform.

The Republican Party has been using mob scenes for some time now... There was the 2000 election when they brought in their thugs to stop the recount. Then again during election times, especially the McCain/Palin rallies. Mob mentality was in vogue during that conservative get-togetherness. Palin, along with her talk radio groupies would tell their base anything, short of go out and lynch the opposition, to rile their followers into a hateful bunch of bigots.

Now again, they are at it with their dusting off of the ugly mob crowds and sending them out to descend upon democratic town hall meetings. These people (MOBS) are blatantly hateful and law abiding citizens don't know what to make of their anger... and that's exactly how they win. So many people believe they are just a crazy fringe and laugh them off while they grow just like the movie blob and cover the land with gooey, sticky, nasty hostility...

The main problem with normal, regular people is, they don't realize how many stupid, crazy people live in this country... When one of the stupids get wind of what the other stupids are doing they jump out of their boring lives and join the mob band-wagon. I sure hope the DNC does not turn its head away from this GOP MOB ploy... these agitated nuts are out for blood.

Wow, Paul Krugman is another TELL IT LIKE IT IS... It's not health care reform these nutbags (as in teabag) are upset over... It's the fact that we have a black president... I'm telling you America's bigotry is alive and well. Here's the link to Paul Krugman's article: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/07/opi... thinkingblue

What the hell is the problem here? Including a public option would save billions of dollars, but Congress cant come to an agreement? Do they think we're all stupid? Oh yes, right, it's better to be subjected to skyrocketing health care costs, driven by the high costs of administering private plans? Yup, no competition is what Democracy is all about.
I hope everyone will feel the passion and hop on board for your 04.16 cent 1000 mile ride to a more efficient Health Care Industry and one that matches the other industrialized nations who have less money than our America but have a Health Care System that puts ours to shame.

I just donated a dollar a day till health care reform gets passed. (Small price to pay for something so immensely important. Just one dollar in a 24 hour Earth rotation.)
(The circumference of the Earth at the equator is 25,000 miles. The Earth rotates in about 24 hours. Therefore, if you were to hang above the surface of the Earth at the equator without moving, you would see 25,000 miles pass by in 24 hours, at a speed of 25000/24 or just over 1000 miles per hour.) MORE HERE
That's a little over 4 cents to travel over 1000 miles, in an hour. Pretty good bargain if you ask me. And if it shows the insatiably greedy insurance companies that "we the people" mean business and will not settle for anything less than a passage of a public option in this Health Care Reform, debate (and it will represent an even more cost efficient effect over the years of one's life.) thinkingblue

Once again Keith weighs in about the Republican Mob Scenes (hired thugs) that have been taking place across America at Town Hall Meetings. This made me think back to the election of 2000 when another group of hired Republican thugs were making their voices (loud mouth screams and yells) heard to STOP THE FLORIDA RECOUNT. This mob mentality worked for them then, so they are doing it again. What we are seeing is not dé·jà vu, it's a RE-ENACTMENT OF THE 2000 STOP THE RECOUNT TACTICS brought to you by the GOP! Did I mention STUPID? All these words describe anyone, ANYONE who subscribes to the recent propaganda that the Health/Insurance Industries are bombarding us with, (and spending millions upon millions of dollars to do so) in the hopes of putting a stop to any new Health Care Reform. And why would they do this you might ask? Well they stand to lose billions of dollars if a public option gets passed. So if you are taken in by these shysters just glance above, I'm sure you will find a word you can write on a label and stick on your nincompoop of a chest, better yet, your whacko forehead! Then everyone can see who amongst us is the scared cowardly dolt! thinkingblue

4 cents to travel 1000 miles in an hour - Anyone interested?

CLICK HERE TO GO TO republicansforobama.org SITE:

I just donated a dollar a day till health care reform gets passed. (Small price to pay for something so immensely important. Just one dollar in a 24 hour Earth rotation.)

(The circumference of the
Earth at the equator is 25,000 miles. The Earth rotates in about
24 hours. Therefore, if you were to hang above the surface of the Earth at the equator without moving, you would see 25,000 miles
pass by in 24 hours, at a speed of 25000/24 or just over 1000 miles per hour.)
MORE HERE

That's a little over 4 cents to travel over 1000 miles, in an hour. Pretty good bargain if you ask me. And if it shows the insatiably greedy insurance companies that "we the people" mean business and will not settle for anything less than a passage of a public option in this Health Care Reform, debate (and it will represent an even more cost efficient effect over the years of one's life time.)

(The report, How Health Care
Reform Can Lower the Costs of Insurance Administration (issue
brief, 20 pages, PDF), found that including both private and
public insurance choices in a new national insurance plan could
save the nation as much as $265 billion in administrative costs
between 2010 and 2020, while a plan that provided a choice of
private plans only would increase administrative costs by $32
billion over the same period. Savings from the mixed
private-public reform approach would be realized through lower
marketing and underwriting costs, reduced costs associated with
claims administration, less time spent negotiating provider
payment rates, and fewer or standardized commissions to insurance
brokers.

Firedoglake.

What the hell is the problem here? Including a public option would save hundreds of billions of dollars, but Congress can’t come to an agreement? Do they think we're all stupid? Oh yes, right, it's better to be subjected to skyrocketing health care costs, driven by the high costs of administering private plans? Yup, no competition is what Democracy is all about.

I hope everyone will feel the passion and hop on board for your
04.16 cent 1000 mile ride to a more efficient Health Care
Industry and one that matches the other industrialized nations
who have less money than our America but have a Health Care
System that puts ours to shame.

Myth: The
U.S. has the best health care system in the world.

Fact: The U.S. has among the worst health statistics of all rich
nations.

Summary

The U.S. does not have the best health care system in the world -
it has the best emergency care system in the world. Advanced U.S.
medical technology has not translated into better health
statistics for its citizens; indeed, the U.S. ranks near the
bottom in list after list of international comparisons. Part of
the problem is that there is more profit in a pound of cure than
an ounce of prevention. Another part of the problem is that
America has the highest level of poverty and income inequality
among all rich nations, and poverty affects one's health much
more than the limited ministrations of a formal health care
system.

August Offensive to Define Health Care Debate: Insurance Companies in the Bull's Eye

A potentially decisive battle to define this year's health care debate - and the Obama
Presidency - will take place in town hall meetings, little league bleaches, and conversations on door steps near you during the August Congressional recess.

The White House, its Congressional allies, and progressive
organizations supporting health care reform have launched a new
August offensive to write the narrative of the health care
debate. The story line is clear: on the one side are America's
health care consumers. On the other are the eight private health
insurance companies that dominate the health insurance market,
who are doing so much to deep-six the health insurance reform
that America so desperately needs.

Americans United for Change (for which I am General Consultant)
helps kick off this offensive today with a new TV spot that
begins to personalize the private health insurance industry. It
asks the question: Why do the health insurance companies and
Republicans want to kill President Obama's health insurance
reform? It answers with the tale of H. Edward Hanway, the CEO of
giant Cigna Insurance.

Hanway made $12.2 million as CEO of Cigna last year. Sometimes
that kind of number just rolls off the tongue. But someone who
makes $12.2 million is making $5,883 per hour. He makes 30 times
more than the CEO of the federal government - the President. He
makes more in one day than the average American worker makes all
year long.

And that's not all. Hanway just announced he will be retiring at
year's end. For his retirement, H. Edward will get a good deal
more than a gold watch. He will get a golden parachute worth $73
million. Probably a fair amount more than the guy who runs
Medicare, don't you think?

The private insurance industry is pretty crazed about a health
insurance reform plan that will require them to compete with a
public health insurance option focused on covering everyone and
controlling costs, instead of making off with fortunes.

They would love to see a plan that requires the taxpayers to
reach into their jeans and plunk down hundreds of billions more
dollars as long as they could continue to skim their take off an
ever-exploding national health care bill. They would love to have
the government require that everyone must buy their health care
insurance. But the idea of competing with a public plan that
forces efficiency, drives down the industry's growing profit
margins and gives consumers an option other than the oligopoly of
eight major health insurance firms? They think that is a terrible idea.

They feel the same way towards a public health insurance option
that the local mob boss feels about some interloper who tries to
cut into the piece of the action he takes from the bookies
operating within his turf.

So, like the local mob boss, they will be pulling out all the
stops in August to terrorize members of Congress and sow fear and
confusion about the Obama Health Insurance Reform plan. They will
run ads. They will make copious political contributions. They
will provide ammunition to the right-wing talk show hosts. They
will do everything in their power to stop the Obama plan dead in
its tracks, because they know that once people have a new health
insurance system, there will be no going back.

But this August, Progressives have no intention of being bowled
over by the assault of the "insurance gang."
Progressives have learned the lesson of 1994, and this time we
will go right at them. There are four reasons why we are likely
to prevail:

• The polling shows clearly that most people agree that the
health insurance industry has worn out its welcome with
Americans. Since 1994, there have simply been too many people
denied coverage for pre-existing conditions, or told that they
are no longer covered because they have gotten a serious illness,
or gouged so that H. Edward Hanway can have a $73 million
retirement package. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know
that something's wrong with the health insurance industry when
premiums go up three times faster than wages and 14,000 people a
day are losing their health insurance, yet insurance industry
profits still keep going up in the midst of a horrible recession.

• Even though the health insurance industry has more
resources than we do, it is also true that it costs less to
convince people that what is good for them is good for them, than
it does to convince people that what is bad for them is good for them.

• We have a President and Democratic leadership in Congress
willing to make the case against the insurance companies in
stark, clear terms.

• Well-organized progressive coalitions like Health Care for
America Now (HCAN), and Obama's field operation - Organize for
America -- have been preparing for this engagement for months.
They have been accumulating resources, testing public opinion,
organizing grassroots field operations - all in preparation for
this decisive battle.

Now the insurance gang has shown its hand. Of all of the
"stakeholders" in the health care industry, it is the
one that is prepared to sink health care reform if change
threatens its ability to siphon off billions of dollars into the
bank accounts of the H. Edward Hanway's of the world.

This month let's all look carefully at the way the H. Edward
Hanway's live. Let's contemplate whether the fortunes of a few
are worth the continued suffering of 43 million Americans who
worry everyday that they might fall seriously ill - or be injured
driving home -and be bankrupted by their health care bills.

Let's ponder whether we should protect those fortunes, even
though by doing so we continue to pay 50% more per person for
health care than any other country on Earth, for outcomes that
rank 37th in the world.

Let's put ourselves in the shoes of the woman who testified
before the House Energy and Commerce Committee, who had paid her
health care premiums for years and had her policy
"rescinded" (cancelled) on a technicality after she got
cancer. When asked if they could guarantee that their companies
would not continue to "rescind" policies in the future,
the insurance company representatives refused to do so. Wouldn't
want to cut into H. Edward's $5,883 per hour pay check, after all.

During the month of August, let's make sure that the topic of
conversation at every bar stool, kitchen table and barber shop is
the health insurance industry and the small group of people who
profit from its fine print and monopoly practices.

Much of the health insurance industry's power is its ability to
pull the strings of politicians from behind the curtain. Like
Count Dracula, another famous baron who was good at siphoning off
other people's assets, the health insurance industry does a lot
better if it is not exposed to daylight.

In the next four weeks, let's light up the health insurance
industry like Yankee Stadium on an August night.

If we all do that, when the game is over, after decades of
struggle, America's consumers will finally come out as winners.
